VIBRATIONS WITHOUT WORDS
""There is the art of lutherie. Violin makers are extraordinary craftsmen who learn to make wood vibrate in the most incredible ways. Rarely are luthiers also great musicians; indeed, they are often fascinated to watch musicians play on their instruments. At the same time, a great musician is rarely also a great luthier.Wu Shu styles are tools to bring to life a form of art that expresses itself through the body and mind. Too many people think they are musicians but get lost in the work of luthiers. Many others are luthiers who, knowing only the rudiments of music, delude themselves into thinking they are musicians.
The harmonic rules are the same for every instrument. Musicians recognize each other. They speak the same language, until the musical rules are sublimated. Then there are no more fixed rules. There are no more words. Instruments no longer count, only vibration remains.
In my martial life I continue to study in order to forget. To forget appearance, form and all that is superficial. I forget in order to create space for what is really important. Something that no one can take away from you, that no one can deny. Something that transforms you deeply. Without a name. That manifests itself in every gesture and thought.
I translate for you this short piece by Zhuang Zhou that tells of the beauty and importance of forgetting:
筌者所以在鱼,得鱼而忘筌
蹄者所以在兔,得兔而忘蹄
言者所以在意,得意而忘言.
吾安得忘言之人而與之言哉?
"Bamboo traps are for catching fish, once you catch the fish you can forget about the trap. Rabbit traps are for catching rabbits, once you catch the rabbit you can forget about the trap. Words are for expressing meaning, once you have captured the meaning, you can forget about the words. Where can I find a person who has forgotten the words so that I can talk to him?"
